My Story
I never really understood why people would spend so much money on travel. It seemed like such an extravagant waste—why spend on fleeting experiences when you could invest in something more lasting? I was content with my life as it was, finding joy in the familiar routines and comforts of home. But then I met someone who completely shifted my perspective. My boyfriend at the time was an avid traveler, someone who lived for the thrill of discovering new places. He would talk endlessly about the incredible experiences he'd had—the landscapes, the cultures, the people. He was convinced that travel was worth every penny, and he wanted to share that with me. Despite my reservations, I decided to take the plunge. My first trip? Australia and New Zealand—a journey that would forever change my life.
From the moment I stepped off the plane, I felt like I had entered a new world. One evening, deep in the heart of the Port Douglas rainforest, I found myself seated at a long table for a Flames of the Forest dinner. The air was thick with the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth, and the only light came from candlelight and the flickering torches that cast an orange glow over the forest. The haunting sound of a didgeridoo filled the night, its deep, resonant tones weaving through the trees and stirring something ancient within me. The night was alive with the sounds of the rainforest—distant animal calls, rustling leaves, and the rhythmic drumming of the Indigenous performers who shared their ancient stories with us. I felt a deep connection to the land, something that I had never experienced before.
Another unforgettable moment came when we explored the Great Barrier Reef. I remember the rush of excitement as I dove into the clear, turquoise waters. As I came face to face with life-sized fish, their vibrant colors swirling in the water around me, I was struck by how surreal it all felt. Instinctively, I reached out to touch one, just to see if it was real. But in a flash, it disappeared, darting away before my fingers could graze its shimmering scales. It was as if the reef was teasing me, reminding me that some of the most beautiful things in life can’t be captured—they can only be experienced.
In New Zealand, my sense of adventure was tested again and again. One of the most memorable moments was when I decided to try zorbing—a uniquely Kiwi invention that involves rolling down a hill inside a giant, inflatable ball. As soon as I was secured inside the Zorb, we were off, tumbling head over heels, with the world spinning wildly around me. The sensation was like nothing I had ever felt before—pure, unbridled joy mixed with a hint of chaos. I couldn’t stop laughing, the sound of my laughter mingling with the laughter of others echoing across the hillside. It was exhilarating, freeing, and completely unforgettable.
But perhaps the most awe-inspiring experience was when I found myself surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of New Zealand's fjords. As we cruised through the serene waters, the sheer cliffs rose majestically on either side, their faces etched with ancient scars from glaciers long gone. Waterfalls cascaded down the rock faces, disappearing into the mist below, while the silence of the fjords was only broken by the occasional call of a bird or the gentle ripple of the water. It was a place that felt untouched by time, a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature. Sitting on the deck of that boat, taking it all in, I felt a profound sense of peace and gratitude. It was moments like these that made me realize why people invest in travel—these experiences, these connections with the world, were worth more than anything I could have imagined.
Traveling with my boyfriend brought us closer, and when he proposed to me on a ledge at Machu Picchu, surrounded by the breathtaking Andean mountains, it felt like the culmination of everything I had discovered about myself through travel. But even after our relationship ended, my love affair with travel continued. I began to explore the world on my own, discovering joy and freedom in solo adventures that I had never thought possible. Now, after more than 20 years and 65 countries, I can say without hesitation that every penny spent on travel has been worth it! What once seemed like a waste has become one of the best investments of my life. It’s not just the places I’ve seen, but the person I’ve become through those experiences. The happy ending is that I fell in love with my life. I travel to my favorite countries, savor my favorite foods, and dance to my favorite music. Traveling made me a storyteller, an adventurer, and most importantly, it helped me discover the joy of living life on my own terms.

Colmar, France
Stepping into Colmar felt like stepping into a dream. The pastel-hued buildings, flower-filled balconies, and winding canals instantly brought me back to the kind of magic I seek in every corner of the world. As I walked along the cobblestone streets of “Little Venice,” I couldn’t help but feel a sense of romance—a connection not just with the place but with the stories of those who’ve lived here for centuries.
My first evening in Colmar was unforgettable. I found a cozy corner in a local bistro, where I ordered a plate of escargot and a glass of crisp, refreshing Riesling. It was more than just a meal; it was a moment of discovery. With each bite and sip, I felt a deeper sense of connection to Alsace’s rich history and culture, a place where French and German influences blend into something uniquely its own. As the sun set over the canal, I reflected on how travel has a way of making us fall in love not just with the world, but with the beauty of experiencing life in slow, savory moments.
The next morning, I set off for the nearby villages, eager to explore more of Alsace’s hidden gems. Eguisheim was my first stop—a village so picturesque that it felt like a scene from a storybook. The narrow, winding lanes circled around a central square, drawing me toward quaint cafes and intimate wine cellars. There’s a palpable warmth in these villages, where winemakers still take time to share stories of their craft. I lingered here, savoring the tranquility and the opportunity to connect with locals over another glass of Riesling.
Riquewihr, my next destination, was just as charming but offered its own unique rhythm. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, the medieval village seemed to come alive with each step. I found myself wandering into artisan shops and picking up handcrafted souvenirs, reminders of the region’s enduring traditions. I even stumbled upon a small, family-run restaurant where I enjoyed a leisurely meal of coq au Riesling—comforting and rich, just like the memories I was collecting.
By the time I reached Strasbourg, I was fully immersed in the romance of Alsace. As I approached the majestic Cathedral of Notre-Dame, I noticed a young woman standing just outside its grand entrance, singing opera. Her powerful voice filled the air, echoing through the square and adding an unexpected, breathtaking layer to the already awe-inspiring scene. I stood in stillness, captivated by the music, feeling a wave of emotion that seemed to echo the very spirit of this ancient city. It wasn’t just a visit—it was a moment that captured my soul.
As I wandered through the cobblestone streets of Petite France, the scent of fresh bread and pastries mingled with the crisp autumn air. I paused at a riverside cafe, sipping a glass of local Riesling while watching boats drift by on the canal. In that moment, I realized that travel isn’t just about new places—it’s about the feelings and stories that come to life along the way.
Douro Valley,
Portugal
After exploring the vibrant streets of Porto, I embarked on an adventure deep into the Douro Valley. In true vintage style, I traveled in a red Cadillac convertible—a symbol of timeless elegance. Jao, our charming local driver, knew every twist and turn of the valley, guiding us with stories as rich as the wine produced here. I could see the snaking Douro river at the bottom of the terraced vineyards that stretched out into the horizon.
The first stop was the stately Casa de Mateus, an 18th-century baroque manor. Though not a classic castle, it epitomized the region’s grandeur and history, perfectly setting the tone for the journey ahead.
As we continued, we passed breathtaking terraced vineyards, each row telling its own story of tradition and bold flavors. Jao led us to a serene picnic spot amidst the vines, where he unpacked a feast of local delicacies—cured meats, artisanal cheeses, fresh figs, and a bottle of Mateus Rosé, a nod to the estate we’d visited. It was a feast for the senses, savored under the warm sun and among the whispers of the vines .
As I sipped the rich red wine, I felt utterly enveloped by the beauty of the valley. With the sun beginning its slow descent, I realized that this moment was a love letter from Portugal…stealing my heart!
Brugge, Belgium
As morning mist lifted from Bruges’ canals, the clop-clop of horse-drawn carriages echoed through cobblestone streets. The unusual medieval architecture—stepped gables and ornate facades—created a fairytale-like atmosphere. Drawn by the sweet scent of freshly baked waffles, I found a small café and savored a Liege waffle, caramelized and topped with fresh strawberries. It was a sweet start to my journey, a taste of Belgium’s rich culinary heritage.
At the bustling Grote Markt, I admired the majestic Belfry of Bruges before wandering to Rozenhoedkaai, the city’s most picturesque street. With ivy-clad buildings reflecting in the tranquil canal, it felt like stepping into a painting. As I strolled, I was delighted to find street puppetry—a local art that brought centuries-old folklore to life through expressive marionettes. The playful performances added an unexpected touch of magic to Bruges, showcasing the city’s love for storytelling.
I soon found myself on a canal boat tour, gliding under stone bridges and alongside historic buildings while tales of swans, merchants, and forbidden love filled the air. Bruges, with its timeless beauty, felt like a city made for romance.
In Ghent, the energy shifted. The massive Gravensteen Castle loomed over the city center, its ancient walls whispering tales of knights and noble secrets. The Graslei, lined with colorful guild houses, was equally enchanting as the twilight lights shimmered over the river.
Before leaving Belgium, I couldn’t resist trying frites—crispy, golden, and served in a cone. Sampling them with creamy mayonnaise and tangy andalouse sauce, I felt I’d captured another delicious piece of Belgian culture.
Pedaling back to Bruges through the Flemish countryside the next morning, I passed windmills and lush fields under a bright sun. As I returned to the sound of horses’ hooves, I realized that the charm of Bgium was about more than just its sights and flavors—it was about the feeling of discovery.
As I watched the canals shimmer under the moon that night, I felt the gentle tug of wanderlust, that irresistible urge to continue exploring. Bruges and Ghent had left their mark on my heart, like the tender beginning of a love story. I knew this was just one chapter, and there were many more to come. I was romancing the world, falling in love one country at a time
